Betsson Applies for Danish License

Betsson, the online betting and gaming giant from Sweden is applying for a new gaming license from the Danish gaming authority in the lead up to 01.01.2012 when new online gaming regulations will come into effect.

They are applying for a license that will allow them to legally offer their sports betting, online casino and online poker games in Denmark.

Betsson is planning on localizing its Danish operation with local domains and is expected to operate with the domains betsafe.dk, Betsson.dk and casinoeuro.dk (Casino Euro is an online casino that is owned by Betsson).

The application for the Danish license is made just before new eGaming regulatory framework comes into effect at the beginning of 2012.

For many years the Danish online gaming market was subject to a gaming monopoly that was held by a company whose major shareholder was the Danish government itself.

Initially the Danish government objected to opening up its online gambling market to foreign or even local operators, but growing pressure from the European Union worked towards making the government reconsider.

This was coupled with the fact that most other European countries were moving towards opening their online gambling market under strict regulation and establishing a regulatory and taxation framework that will keep their citizens secure and make the government profit for increased tax revenues.

Another big online gambling operator Party Casino have already applied and were granted a 5 year license to offer their interactive gambling services to the Danish public.

It looks unlikely that Betsson will be declined a gaming license in Denmark so it is expected to start offering Danish players the best casino and poker games together with sports betting come the new year.
