Casinos in Las Vegas

Las Vegas is without a doubt the gambling capital of the USA. At night, this city comes alive with neon lights and a rush of visitors from every corner of the world who have travelled to Las Vegas with the only goal of eating, drinking, socialising and gambling at casinos until bliss allows no more.

History of Las Vegas

Las Vegas in the state of Nevada was founded in 1905 and was officially declared a city 6 years later. Before the end of the century, Las Vegas had managed to become the most populated of all cities built during the 20th century. The city became known as "Sin City" thanks to its enormous selection of adult entertainment.

The city was named 'Las Vegas' by Spaniards who used water in the area whilst they were travelling to the north and west of the country. The city's name refers to artesian wells underlying the grasslands of the area (these are called 'vegas' in Spanish). The area still belonged to Mexico when John C. Frémont travelled to the Las Vegas Valley on the 3rd May 1844. 11 years later, the USA had taken over the area and on the 10th May 1855 the area was handed to 30 Mormons by Brigham Young. On the 15th May 1905, Las Vegas became a part of the rail network. Finally, Las Vegas was declared a city on the 16th March 1911.

Las Vegas Today

One century later, Las Vegas has a surface area of 294 square metres. The city is surrounded by deserts and mountains. The last 20 years have to some extent seen a change in the skyline of the city. The Mirage (a popular casino resort) was opened in 1989, and this drew people from the inner city. During the 1990s, lots of new casino resorts were built in the outskirts of the city. Plenty of building work was done to bring people back into the inner city. Today, Las Vegas primarily consists of hotels and casinos. People travel to Las Vegas from all corners of the planet with the aim of playing at one of the city's remarkably elegant casinos.

Gambling and other Activities

The city's first casino was opened in 1931 and was named 'Northern Club'. Nowadays, this casino is known as 'La Bayou'. Today, there is a huge range of casinos to choose from. For example, you can visit Binion's Gambling Hall and Hotel, California Hotel and Casino, Fremont Hotel and Casino, Main Street Casino, Golden Gate Hotel and Casino, The Golden Nugget, El Cortez, Fitzgeralds, Four Queens, Gold Spike Hotel and Casino and Las Vegas Club (to name a few).

What's even better is that the fun doesn't end there! Tourists can take part in a huge amount of other tremendously entertaining activities if they want to take a break from playing at the casinos. There is a big selection of museums that we strongly recommend, including Las Vegas Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement and Neon Museum. Here you can learn a lot more about the fascinating city Las Vegas! Visitors who are into art can take part in something that is called 'First Friday Celebration' and involves art being displayed and music being played to visitors on the first Friday of every month (in the Arts District). Las Vegas has its own zoo which is called 'Southern Nevada Zoological-Botanical Park' and it boasts more than 150 different species of animals and plants. Aside from this, there are also lots of musicals, yearly events, parks, sports facilities, public swimming pools, luxurious restaurants and exciting stores to visit, which means that tourists simply cannot get bored!

Should I visit Las Vegas?

Of course! If you have never visited Las Vegas, you should book your flight ticket immediately! The city is truly the "Sin City" of the world, and if you have never visited a casino resort, this is without a doubt the first city you should visit. People come from all of the world to enjoy themselves in this labyrinth of casinos. Despite the fact that the city is a young city and perhaps does not have a particularly rich cultural history, you are guaranteed a holiday that you will never forget!
