Gambling in Russia was always popular, from the early days of the monarchs up until the soviet takeover where the communist rulers have banned all forms of gambling as they deemed it to be an activity that contradicts the principles of communism.
In the late 80th of the 20th century with the fall of the communist bloc gambling exploded and was not regulated at all in what is to become the Russian Federation. Land casinos started popping out all over the capital Moscow and in many other big cities.
This free gambling market that for almost twenty years went completely unchecked and untaxed was brought to a halt by President Vladimir Putin in 2006 that passed a bill that banned all the large casinos and hundreds of small gambling halls from Moscow and other cities.
Gambling was restricted to four zones in Russia and as Russian is so vast they were speared in fair way with two zones being in European Russia, one in Siberia and one in the Far East part of Russia. This new bill applied only to casinos. Bookmakers were still allowed to operate anywhere they had a license.
Online gambling in Russia is not forbidden. There is no legislation that governs online casinos and while the Russian government does not issue local operators a license to operate a Russian online casino, they do not stop Russian citizens from partaking in any online gambling with foreign online casinos.
There is no doubt that if the Russian government was to catch up on how much of Russian money finds its way to foreign operators they will be bound to follow in the footsteps of other European nations and regulate the online gambling industry.
