Wayne Rooney's father and uncle have been arrested on suspicion of taking part in rigged football games where bets were made about a red card being handed out during a match between Motherwell and Hearts in December of 2010. The Police in Merseyside supposedly arrested a total of 9 people on Thursday morning in connection with these events.
Among those arrested was Motherwell midfielder Steve Jennings, who supposedly intentionally got himself kicked off by referee Stevie O'Reilly in the league match on 14th December 2010. He placed his hand on Mr O'Reilly and argued with him when a penalty appeal was turned down towards the end of the game. Abusive language was used before the red card was handed out.
Thursday's arrests are the result of 9 months of investigation into the incident by the Gambling Commission, which raised a brow following a pattern of betting where stakes were put on a red card being given, amongst other suspicious circumstances. It is believed that Mr. Rooney and the other men arrested are guilty of gambling fraud in relation to the events in December of 2010.
The incident first came to the attention of the police after two members of the Association of British Bookmakers raised a red flag after a range of questionable activities seemed to suggest foul play, such as a £500 bet being placed from a newly opened account in Liverpool.
Mr. Rooney and his brother have been freed on bail and are awaiting further action. Mr. Jennings continues to deny any malicious intent.
