Second Gambling Scandal Hits Rooney Family

Once again, the Rooney family name is being dragged through the dirt with regards to betting fraud. Last week, famous footballer Wayne Rooney's father and uncle were arrested on suspicion of taking part in rigging football games and have since been released on bail. This week, the police have turned to the actions of Terry Owen, who is brother to Wayne Rooney's team-mate Michael Owen.

The Manchester Police are looking into the case, which involves a £200 phone bet placed by Mr Owen that Wayne Rooney would stay with Manchester United despite most bets showing that the common belief was that he would switch teams to Manchester City, which is completely understandable considering the fact that Mr Rooney had announced that he was leaving Manchester United.

Wayne Rooney ended up surprising bettors by signing a contract which will span the next five years with Manchester United, meaning that Terry Owen nearly profited a grand on the investment. The fact that makes the whole situation even more suspicious is that the shocking change of plans occurred just an hour after the unlikely bet was placed.

Terry Owen claims that the bet had nothing to do with his brother, but the two brothers will nonetheless face an investigation into the facts of the case. The Gambling Act strictly prohibits betting on a result that is known in advance. The criminal offence can be penalised with up to two years in prison.

We await the outcome of both cases, which seem almost too coincidentally connected. However, there is nothing to suggest that Rooney knew anything about the gamble, despite the fact that he initially denied making the bet.
